Meeting Ely’s ghostly monks

Having been bitten by the Wherigo bug during our recent holiday, I was desperate to get out and do another. So it perhaps comes as no surprise that before i’d even unpacked my suitcase I headed off to Isle of Ely in search of one!

It was another sunny May afternoon and I’d arrived ahead of school kick out. Hence I decided to grab a few unfound caches on the newer housing estates before heading into town.

After some nice quick caches & dashes including one at the Mcdonalds drive thru (that was an interesting experience!) I arrived at St Mary’s car park & switched on the ‘Wherigo the Monks Go’. I was quickly instructed to head to Oliver Cromwell’s House which brought back slightly nerve-racking memories as I once stayed in the eerie house overnight trying to spot Cromwell’s ghost for a feature in the local rag - I never did see him! I didnt during this trip either, but I met a ghost of another kind...that of a virtual ghostly monk, a friendly one thank goodness.

Not to spoil the experience for others planning to do this fantastic Wherigo, I won’t say too much more, other than I spent a very nice hour leisurely wandering around some of Ely’s famous historic attractions, meeting various ghostly apparitions and collecting snippets of info which finally led to the final cache. A very enjoyable Wherigo that I highly recommend.

I finished my trip to Ely with a nice walk along a pretty country lane on the northern outskirts of the town. Here I picked up 3 more caches including the huge ‘If you go down to the woods today’ cache and another in the Bishop’s Way series. Sadly I lost my glasses somewhere along the walk, no doubt they’ve made it into a magpie’s nest by now!

A few night’s later I was back out caching in East Cambs with one part of team Dannyjgb. We decided to try and clear up a couple of caches on the outskirts of Soham. After successfully finding both pretty quickly, we had just enough time before sunset to grab a couple more in Stuntney.

The first was another brilliant cache by local COs Shadyone44 & Teampod, ‘Stuntney TB Hotel’. Fab container, nicely hidden, and once my accomplice had squeezed her way through the gap to join me at GZ I opened the door. The inside did not disappoint, great fun, and a great cache for the little ones. We swapped TBs, did the admin and said goodbye to the occupants.

Our final stop was at ‘Tweetie’. Another clever little cache, so well hidden, it took us a few minutes to locate her.

Unfortunately hairdressers, Royal Weddings and garden centres drew our week to a close without a further find. But we did find time to place a few new caches...more on those soon.
