Field puzzles & a bit of 80s pop
This week we went back to the 80s! Yes we donned our RaRa skirts, Relax T-shirts & leg warmers & headed to Norfolk to Rock Norwich! Ok, so we didn’t actually wear the leg warmers, that would have been a bit mad as the temperature sky rocketed & the queues for water were longer than the bars. But we did spend an enjoyable day sitting in a field with 20,000 other aging revellers listening to the likes of Toyah, Human League and OMD, despite the fact there were unfound caches just metres away! Oh the ‘Temptation’ to storm ‘Through the Barricades’ and grab one or two, but somehow we refrained!
However, the following day was a chance to grab some caches around Norwich so we headed to a great trail near East Carleton. Set in memory of the COs dog Roly we had a lovely time wandering through pretty park land grabbing a number of caches.
Whilst searching for the first we had already caught the attention of the locals, a flock of sheep which included a number of curious baby lambs! Just sooo cute! The first hide actually proved to be the trickiest of the lot but eventually after spending a while in the shade under the tree canopy locating it, we finally set off across the sheep field.
We soon found several other caches and swapped a TB, before reaching our first field puzzle. It was an ingenious homemade puzzle which involved quite a bit of twisting & turning, but I got there in the end, whilst the other half looked on slightly bewildered at what I was trying to do.
The next cache was also another very well thought out field puzzle - a mysterious mathematical box. The instruction was to use the numbers on the box to create one number and complete an equation which would then give the 4 digit code to open the box and access the log. Unsure of what to add, subtract or multiply we decided to try a slightly simpler process of elimination and one by one worked our way up from 1 to....well I won’t say where we got to, as I don’t want to spoil it for others, but having ruled out several possibles and improbables, we were finally in signing the log and swapping another TB.
A lovely trail, a lovely walk & some inventive fun caches, definitely worth checking out if your local or visiting sometime.
The week also saw us do a nice one (and a bit) hour walk at Stoke Ash in Suffolk. After a day to trip to the coast with my nieces 3ft & 4ft, we stopped off here on the way home. Again some clever hides and some fun caches, & barely a film pot in sight. This trail is definitely for those who appreciate homemade caches, clever hints and enjoy the find even if it takes a few minutes.
The final caching trip this week was to Cockfield in Suffolk to undertake the North Cockfield Series Loop by local CO mwade69. I’d completed his South loop a couple of years ago, and actually bumped into him whilst doing the trail, so it was nice to finally return to complete the northern one. This was a solo trip for me after work, as the other half had a far more important date with a pool table & a load of old balls!
On arriving I parked up in the village of Cockfield Great Green and started the series at no.8. It was an enjoyable walk through some pretty Suffolk country side and nothing was too challenging - all caches bar one were found.
I had a slight hiccup at the end when I missed a footpath sign and accidentally ended up in a farmers yard, but fortunately I met a friendly farmer, and a few apologies later, I was back on track.
So that’s it for this week. I’m off to find my Walkman and remind myself how great 80s pop really was...well some of it anyway!
