Our Top 10 Geocaches of 2021

Image
2021 has been another turbulent year for us all, as the pandemic continued to affect so many aspects of our lives.  Whilst we sadly missed out on holidays and caching trips overseas this year, our staycations and many journeys to towns and cities across the UK yielded lots of brilliant geocache finds. We discovered so many great caches. But which were the best?…. After much debate we agreed upon our top 10 caches of 2021 - those we found the most fun, inventive and memorable.  Here they are:  1. Simon Says (Dalham Fun & Games 5). (Traditional, Dalham, Suffolk) CO: GeoJosh2010. 2. South Lakes Webcam Coniston. (Webcam, Coniston, Cumbria) CO: Flipflopnick.  3. 11 Gate Lodge Loop. (Traditional, Brandon, Suffolk). CO: LordandLady.  4. Great Knott Geocache Trail. (Traditional, Lakeside, Cumbria) CO: Woodland Trust.    5. Rushbrooke #7. (Traditional, Rushbrooke, Suffolk) CO: SusieandMaisie.  6. The Needles. (Earthcache, Isle of Wight) ...

Norfolk’s golden mile, and the ‘going nowhere but home’ incident!

Over the past couple of weeks we have really been hitting the geocaching trails in a bid to get to the golden milestone of 10,000 finds.   We had been missing the seaside after our week away enjoying some of Somerset’s scenic coastline, so we decided to head out for the day to Norfolk’s golden mile - Great Yarmouth.     We are fairly frequent visitors to the town so there are very few geocaches left that we haven’t already found, but there was one particular cache that has evaded us for quite some time - KittyWitches sneaky, difficult 5 ‘Fruits de mer’ cache.     The tiny micro was located somewhere within a decorative arch sculpture at the entrance to St George’s Park. However, despite various lengthy attempts in the past to locate the little blighter, we had always failed to find it.     Today with renewed energy we tried again. After 20 minutes of examining both sides of the intricate sculpture, which featured an array of seal life all cast in metal...

Sommerset: The land of Brunel, cheddar & the Wookey Witch

It was holiday time again. Our third this year, but who’s counting! With Covid restrictions lifted in the UK we could have perhaps ventured further afield but not wanting to sit in the confined space of a plane for hours with dozens of other people, we opted for another staycation, this time in Sommerset.   It has been about 14 years since I traversed the county’s tourist spots, so it was nice to return and see some of them again. This time we opted to stay in the slightly busier coastal town of Burnham-on-Sea, not somewhere I’d ever stayed before, but it was good to have a few more amenities on the doorstep as opposed to Brean where I’d stayed in my childhood.   On the way down we encountered a lot of traffic and crawled most the way down the M5. Hence, we decided to stop off at the Michaelwood services for some food and a cache, just a few miles from our destination. It was the first cache of the holiday and it didn’t take long to spot. The following day we headed out to one...
