October: From the tropical shores of St Lucia to the muddy roadsides of England
I’m ashamed to say that October was our worst month in three years of caching. Just 22 caches found, but what a great 22!
First up were a number of finds during the second half of our trip to the Caribbean isle of St Lucia. They included the brilliant earthcache at the Volcano and at Diamond Falls, a pretty waterfall located in the botanical gardens.
In the capital of Castries we located a well hidden cache in the port, right next to where a luxury cruise liner had just docked. A boat trip around the harbour gave us a chance to grab another earthcache this time focusing on the eroding coastline. And we had a giggle at an elderly man who looked like he was trying to command the sea...Poseidon eat your heart out!
Finally, we braved the snakes on the other side of the island to grab one final cache before heading home to the UK.
With DIY and family catch ups dominating much of October, our caching trips became few and far between. However, a few gaps on the calendar encouraged us to grab some caches and dashes around Cherry Hinton, Fulbourn and West Row.
Two local, long unfound caches, were also collected. The first in the beautiful forest around Warren Lodge during a walk with geodog Bobby. It was actually our last unfound cache in the Idle Hands series, and upon arriving at GZ we quickly spotted the appropriately themed gruesome container - a severed arm.
The second was a five stage multi at Freckenham which had me baffled when I pressed a button at stage four and heard a doorbell ring. With no actual houses around for miles, I was rather puzzled until I spotted the little bird house in a tree, which of course contained the cache. Clever!
Earthcache Day was a chance to get my mum out on a lovely walk around Lackford Lakes to collect the required info for the cache and the souvenir.
Speaking of souvenirs, we also picked up the caching connoisseur souvenir this month, in fact just three days into October, largely thanks to a high scoring tourist favourite cache in Castries.
We finished the month with eight caches and dashes around St Ives, Ramsey, Pidley and Bury, on our way to the in-laws for lunch. There were some fun hides, including a cleverly disguised log cache at the Raptor centre, and we finally collected a long solved milestone mystery cache.
I finish this month’s round up with the exciting news that there is now a cache out there with our name on it. Yes we finally hit 1,000 RYO62 finds in September and this month he dedicated a special ‘Congratulations’ mystery cache to us. We’ve solved it and the co-ordinates are now in our GPS ready to collect it. I can’t wait to add that one to the solved list!
